Welcome to my life!
I'm Katherine, a singer, actor, and writer, but more importantly, a lifelong learner. I am trained in many disciplines and love the process of discovering new things. I truly believe that everyone is a teacher in their own right and that you can learn from even the most unexpected places. My main passion in life is connecting with others through story, and I wouldn’t be the performer and person I am today without all the varied paths I have taken.
My theatrical journey began as a young child in my hometown of New Providence, New Jersey. As a shy kid, I was always afraid to speak up, until I discovered improv at my local recreation center. There was no pressure in an environment where your first instinct is unraveled into a world you didn’t know existed. The encouragement I received from my teacher and the support of my fellow young actors allowed me to blossom into the curious and imaginative person I am today.
I continued in theater, acting in plays and improv class, as well as participating in my school choir. There was something so fulfilling about using my voice alongside others to create a harmonious blanket of sound. I quickly became a lover of music and a leader in my choral community, serving as soprano section leader and president of my high school’s select and jazz choirs. It wasn’t until I discovered musicals that I realized my two passions could be combined into one. Musical theater became the center of my life and still remains at the center of my heart. There is something so mesmerizing about a character feeling so intensely that the only way to express themselves is through song.
Over the course of my adolescence, I spent my summers performing at the Summit Playhouse, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and American Music Abroad, and my weekends at Manhattan School of Music Precollege. Through my theater experiences, I discovered my ability as a coloratura and developed a love for opera as well. This led me to study classical voice at New York University, where I earned my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance.
While at NYU, I also pursued my love of the human mind. It has always fascinated me—the complexity of emotion and how it impacts our connection to others. Through my mentor Dr. Niobe Way, a developmental psychologist and professor of the science of human connection, I was able to research this in her Listening Project lab. I entered the classrooms of middle schoolers in an attempt to intervene where the root of stereotyping and disconnection lies. I spent two years interviewing adolescents and unearthing their stories, as well as teaching them to approach others with open questions and open minds, eventually becoming a senior research team leader. In their own words, these kids described their experiences with loneliness, joy, love, and despair. I felt the same indescribable tug in my chest as the first time I witnessed a character in a musical break into song.
I also delved into my love for fiction writing at NYU, attending the Writers in Florence and Writers in Paris advanced fiction workshops. It was there that I realized the connection between all my passions is storytelling. Whether it is through music, psychological research, or fictional worlds, the art of communication is what I believe to be my life’s mission.
I am constantly feeling the tug of threads that bring seemingly distant worlds together, because no matter where I am or what I am doing, there is always a story to tell.
